On 24 March, the United States Air Force inducted its first F-35 Lightning II aircraft into the Euro-Mediterranean Airframe Maintenance, Repair, Overhaul, and Upgrade (MRO&U) facility in Cameri, Italy. This marks the first time a U.S. Air Forces in Europe (USAFE) aircraft has entered an overseas continental U.S. (OCONUS) regional depot.

The inducted aircraft, from the 495th Fighter Squadron, represents a significant milestone in international F-35 cooperation and sustainment. The move makes the U.S. Air Force the fourth partner and fifth service to use the Cameri depot, joining Italy, Norway, and the Netherlands.

“Italy’s significant investment in the Euro-Mediterranean Regional Air Vehicle Maintenance Depot is a testament to our enduring commitment to regional security and cooperation,” said Capt. Sigfrido Chiandussi, Italian National Deputy to the F-35 Joint Program Office (JPO). “This investment is not simply a financial contribution; it is an investment that strengthens the ability of partner nations to work together seamlessly, enhancing our collective response to shared challenges.”

The milestone follows 18 months of detailed coordination led by the F-35 JPO, with involvement from USAFE, the Italian Ministry of Defence, Lockheed Martin, and Leonardo. The depot at Cameri is now further reinforced as a strategic hub for Europe-based F-35 operations.

“Italy is proud to be a driving force behind this crucial initiative, and we are confident that our investment will yield significant returns in terms of regional security, stability, and prosperity for all,” added Chiandussi. His comments underline the strategic value placed on the depot by both Italy and its partners.

The induction of aircraft AF303 demonstrates the depot’s ability to handle modifications, maintenance, and upgrades for multiple allied fleets. This success boosts the F-35 programme’s emphasis on multinational cooperation and global sustainment capabilities.

As the programme evolves, the Cameri facility is expected to play an increasingly vital role in the long-term support of the global F-35 fleet. The development marks a key step in expanding U.S. Air Force involvement within the European MRO&U network.
