France’s Directorate General of Armaments delivered the final Dassault Mirage 2000D upgraded to the RMV standard to the French Air and Space Force on 16 June. Delivery of the aircraft closed a multi-year modernisation programme intended to keep one of France’s key strike platforms in service at least until the middle of the next decade.

Launched in 2015, the RMV programme covered 50 Mirage 2000D aircraft. Dassault Aviation carried out a comprehensive upgrade of the fleet’s avionics, mission systems and weapons.

Alongside the operational aircraft, the DGA Flight Test Centre received two similarly equipped test aircraft. These aircraft support the wider evaluation and validation effort linked to the upgraded configuration.

Among the most visible changes is a modern digital cockpit with multifunction displays. This upgrade improves crew situational awareness and supports closer integration with command systems.

Mission system work also included modernisation of the aircraft’s computer. Obsolescence issues linked to onboard equipment no longer in production were also addressed as part of the programme.

Combat capability has been expanded through the integration of modern MICA IR air-to-air missiles. These weapons replace the older Magic II missiles and strengthen the aircraft’s self-defence options.

Fire support capability has also been improved through integration of the CC422 pod with a 30 mm DEFA 550 F3 cannon. This gives the Mirage 2000D RMV an additional tool for direct support missions in asymmetric conflicts.

Precision strike options have been broadened with the addition of GBU-48 and GBU-50 guided bombs. Existing weapons remain available, including the SCALP cruise missile.

Modernisation also covered communications, data exchange and mission planning systems. Mirage 2000D RMV aircraft can use the TALIOS targeting pod and the ASTAC electronic reconnaissance pod for intelligence data collection.

Mirage 2000D aircraft have formed an important part of French strike aviation for more than three decades. They have been used in operations in Afghanistan, Libya, the Sahel region and the Middle East.

Completion of the RMV programme gives France an upgraded strike capability while the Rafale fleet continues to grow. The modernised aircraft retain operational value for higher-intensity missions and help sustain combat capacity during the transition to larger numbers of newer aircraft.
