France orders 530 Serval Appui SCORPION armoured vehicles for army modernisation

By Defence Industry Europe

The French defence procurement agency (DGA) has ordered 530 Serval Appui SCORPION armoured vehicles for the French Army. The contract, signed on 31 December 2024, marks a major step in military modernisation, with deliveries scheduled between late 2025 and 2031.

Designed for high-intensity conflicts, the Serval Appui SCORPION builds on the capabilities of the existing Serval armoured vehicle. The order also includes an additional 97 Serval vehicles under the same contract, reinforcing France’s SCORPION modernisation programme.

The investment, valued at over €1 billion, supports several key defence companies, including KNDS France, TEXELIS, MBDA, and CS GROUP. These companies will contribute to the vehicle’s production across multiple locations, ensuring domestic industrial support and technological development.

This procurement is part of the Multipurpose Light Tactical Vehicle (VLTP) programme and is aligned with the 2024-2030 military programming law (LPM). It also supports France’s efforts in Surface Air Low Layer Defence and Anti-Drone Warfare by integrating advanced battlefield technologies.

The Serval Appui SCORPION is designed to enhance mobility, protection, and operational autonomy for ground forces. Its modular structure allows for the integration of new high-performance systems tailored to evolving battlefield requirements.

The new vehicles will introduce specialised capabilities, including ground-to-air defence with a version equipped with Mistral 3 missile-firing turrets. Another version will focus on anti-drone warfare, featuring a radar, radio frequency detection, a fire control system, and a 30×113 mm cannon.

Additionally, a tactical communication node variant will be developed, integrating the SYRACUSE IV satellite system and advanced radio communication. These enhancements aim to strengthen connectivity and operational coordination within joint brigades and divisions.

The order represents the third stage of the VLTP programme, following the delivery of 4,380 VT4 vehicles in Stage 1 and the procurement of 103 unprotected medical vehicles in Stage 2. This initiative underscores France’s commitment to strengthening its land forces with modern, adaptable equipment.
