French Army receives first Griffon MEPAC 120mm mobile mortar system

By Defence Industry Europe

The French Army has officially received its first Griffon MEPAC mobile mortar system, equipped with a 120mm semi-automatic mortar. The delivery marks the beginning of a planned procurement of 54 units ordered by the French Ministry of Armed Forces.

Ten additional Griffon MEPAC vehicles are scheduled for delivery this year, with the remaining 43 to be supplied by the end of 2028. The initial batch will undergo technical and operational evaluations to assess its performance in field conditions and to refine tactical deployment strategies.

The Griffon MEPAC will be integrated into eight artillery regiments, each operating a battery of six vehicles. Beyond France, the Belgian Army has also placed an order for at least 24 of these advanced mortar carriers.

The Griffon MEPAC is a versatile six-wheeled armoured vehicle weighing 24.5 tonnes. It is powered by a 400-horsepower six-cylinder Renault Trucks turbodiesel engine, providing both mobility and durability in challenging conditions. Its 120mm 2R2M mortar, mounted inside the vehicle, can fire up to 10 rounds per minute with a maximum range of 13km, potentially extendable to 15km with future munitions.

Advanced systems, such as the ATLAS fire control system, an automatic aiming system, and a Thales inertial navigation system, ensure precision and efficiency. The vehicle also features a roof-mounted remote-controlled 7.62mm machine gun for self-defence during movement and stationary operations.

The Griffon MEPAC is operated by a four-person crew, who benefit from state-of-the-art technology for enhanced battlefield effectiveness.
