The U.S. State Department has approved Denmark’s request for a possible purchase of Lockheed Martin AGM-158 JASSM-ER cruise missiles. The proposed acquisition is valued at up to $842 million.

According to the published information, Denmark is interested in buying up to 200 missiles. The package would also include diagnostic equipment, spare parts, operational support, logistics and training services, and necessary technical publications.

If the agreement is approved, Lockheed Martin would be the main contractor. The company is the manufacturer of the AGM-158 JASSM-ER missile.

Denmark plans to use the weapons with its Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II multirole combat aircraft. In Denmark’s case, the ability to carry and use the AGM-158 JASSM-ER would be limited to external carriage on underwing pylons.

The AGM-158 JASSM and JASSM-ER user list currently includes Australia, Finland, Poland and the United States. Japan and the Netherlands have also signed production contracts for the missile family.

Germany and Italy are among the countries that have expressed interest in acquiring the weapon. The missile is intended to provide the ability to engage surface targets precisely at long range.

The article said missiles from the AGM-158 family have been used intensively in recent months in the air campaign against Iran. The proposed Danish purchase would follow a growing number of countries seeking to equip F-35A aircraft with long-range precision strike weapons.
