The 325th Weapons Squadron conducted the event with the 66th Weapons Squadron. The training gave B-2 aircrews and joint terminal attack controllers an opportunity to demonstrate precision-strike procedures in a realistic operational setting.
The mission highlighted the B-2’s conventional strike role, which forms part of its broader strategic mission. The aircraft is designed to deliver both conventional and nuclear weapons against targets at intercontinental distances.
Low-observable technology allows the B-2 to penetrate sophisticated air defences and operate against heavily protected targets. Its reduced radar, infrared, acoustic, electromagnetic and visual signatures make the aircraft more difficult to detect, track and engage.
The bomber’s flying-wing configuration, composite materials and specialised coatings contribute to its stealth characteristics. Its ability to operate at high altitude also extends sensor coverage and provides greater operational freedom.
The B-2 has an unrefuelled range of about 6,000 nautical miles and can travel approximately 10,000 nautical miles with one aerial refuelling. It can operate above 50,000 feet, reach high-subsonic speeds and carry a payload of 20 tons.
Northrop Grumman continues to maintain and upgrade the B-2 fleet for the Air Force. Its work includes programmed depot maintenance, exterior restoration, software engineering, testing, logistics and product support.
