U.S. Air Force F-35A Lightning II aircraft and Airmen from the 48th Fighter Wing at RAF Lakenheath, England, have arrived in Pirkkala, Finland, for Ramstein Flag 2026. The NATO Allied Air Command exercise is scheduled to run from June 8 to 19.

Ramstein Flag 2026 is a large-scale, multi-domain exercise now in its third year. Allied air forces will conduct combined air operations in northern and southern Europe.

This year marks the first time NATO Allied Air Command has led the planning and execution of the exercise. Combined Air Operations Centre Bodø is serving as the lead CAOC.

The exercise will involve more than 200 aircraft from 18 nations. It will generate more than 150 sorties per day across more than 20 locations in Europe.

The operations are designed to provide challenging combat scenarios. The scenarios will include realistic problem sets in a complex operational environment.

U.S. Airmen and a KC-135 Stratotanker from the 100th Air Refueling Wing at RAF Mildenhall, England, will support the exercise from Ørland, Norway. The tanker will provide aerial refueling to sustain high-tempo operations.

The U.S. Air Force said aerial refueling is critical to extending the reach, endurance and rapid-response capabilities of combat aircraft. It described the capability as a vital force multiplier.

The U.S. Air National Guard’s 123rd Airlift Wing will also support the exercise. The unit will provide Airmen and C-130J Super Hercules aircraft for tactical airlift operations.

The U.S. Air Force said the airlift contribution will support the exercise and strengthen the unit’s wartime readiness. Ramstein Flag 2026 will bring together advanced military air forces from across the Alliance.

According to the release, the exercise will demonstrate NATO’s strength and unity. It will also highlight the Alliance’s commitment to defending its people and shared values.

The U.S. Air Force said multinational collaboration during the exercise will show NATO’s ability to support stability across the Euro-Atlantic area. It said the United States works closely with European Allies and partners to improve early warning systems, share intelligence and coordinate responses to emerging threats.

The release said this cooperation helps build a layered and resilient defense extending the security perimeter far from American shores. It added that by defending the homeland, projecting decisive combat power when needed and positioning the Alliance to deter and defend, the United States safeguards its interests in Europe and around the world.
