The announcement follows the successful first flight and roll-out of the Do228 NXT demonstrator aircraft. GA-ATS said the agreement marks an important milestone for the programme and reflects confidence in the aircraft’s versatility, operational flexibility and suitability for demanding environments.
The Do228 NXT will provide the customer with a modern and adaptable aircraft for humanitarian and special mission requirements. The aircraft is intended to support search and rescue, medical evacuation support, disaster relief, logistics and transport, environmental monitoring, reconnaissance and assessment flights, coordination missions and aerial support for emergency response operations.
GA-ATS said the aircraft can also support missions requiring operations from short or austere runways. It is designed for rapid deployment to affected regions, wide-area coverage and reliable performance in challenging operating conditions.
The company said the Do228 NXT’s short take-off and landing capability, operational efficiency and ability to operate in diverse environments make it suitable for missions where access, speed and dependability are essential. The aircraft is being positioned as a flexible platform for operators working in difficult and time-sensitive conditions.
“Every mission is about reaching people and places where support is urgently needed,” said a representative of the organisation. “The Do228 NXT will strengthen operational flexibility across a wide range of humanitarian scenarios and help us support communities more effectively when time matters most.”
GA-ATS said the Do228 NXT is designed for a wide range of operators and mission profiles. These include humanitarian, governmental, parapublic, transport and other specialised applications.
“We are very pleased that the contracts for the first Do228 NXT have been signed and that the aircraft will be delivered to the launch customer in early 2027,” said Florian Rohe, Managing Director at General Atomics AeroTec Systems. “This confirms that the decision to further develop the Do228 NXT and resume production was the right one.”
Rohe added that the aircraft’s flexibility makes it attractive to customers seeking a robust platform for varied operational requirements. GA-ATS said the launch customer aircraft will be delivered in a mission-ready configuration tailored to its intended operational use.
The company did not disclose the specific onboard systems selected for the aircraft. It said the Do228 NXT will include modern technology supporting situational awareness, mission coordination, communications and effective response in challenging environments.
GA-ATS said the approach underlines the Do228 NXT’s value as a robust and adaptable platform. The aircraft can be configured for a wide range of tasks while remaining focused on practical operational utility.
General Atomics AeroTec Systems is the original equipment manufacturer of the Do228. The aircraft is used worldwide for special missions as well as passenger and cargo transport.
At its Oberpfaffenhofen site, GA-ATS develops and produces the new Do228 NXT with around 400 employees. The company is also active in maintenance and repair of the Do228 and military helicopters, and operates a Do228 flight simulator.
