The submarines, manufactured by thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (tkMS), aim to meet NATO’s new operational requirements. “We are paying particular attention to the proposal to purchase additional submarines due to its importance in terms of security policy, but also because of the high amount of funds required,” said Karsten Klein, a member of the Free Democrats (FDP) on the committee.
The Defence Ministry has submitted the proposal as part of a broader effort to modernise Germany’s military capabilities. In total, the parliamentary budget committee is evaluating 29 “25-million euro proposals,” a term for defence projects exceeding €25 million that require special approval.
Discussions on defence procurement have been described as “good and constructive” by the ministry, although specific details remain under wraps. thyssenkrupp has not yet commented on the procurement plans.
The budget committee is expected to decide on the submarine purchase by the end of the year. This decision will mark a significant step in Germany’s ongoing efforts to enhance its contributions to NATO and ensure the security of Europe’s northern waters.
