The decision to acquire these missiles, which could potentially replace the existing arsenal of Taurus missiles, aligns with Germany’s broader defence strategy. This strategy was hinted at in 2022 when the German government expressed its intent to purchase F-35 fighter jets from the U.S., along with an assortment of missiles designed to complement the stealth aircraft.
Alongside the JASSM-ER missiles, the agreement will include the procurement of various air-to-air and air-to-ground munitions to bolster the capabilities of the F-35 jets previously ordered by Germany. However, “Bild” notes that the process for acquiring the JASSM-ER missiles faced delays, distinguishing them from the earlier phases of the F-35 and associated munitions procurement.
An official contract for the JASSM-ER missiles is anticipated to be finalized this autumn, paving the way for a significant upgrade to the German Air Force’s operational reach and precision. The missiles, renowned for their extended range and stealth features, enable aircraft to engage targets from a safe distance without entering hostile airspace.
A spokesperson for the German defence ministry highlighted the comprehensive nature of the procurement plan, which encompasses an extensive mix of weaponry, including a critical air-to-ground component, as part of the integration of the F-35A into Germany’s military framework. “The relevant contracts have not yet been concluded in full, and it is not possible to anticipate any open decisions,” the spokesperson stated, emphasizing the ongoing nature of the acquisition process.
