Hanwha to showcase advanced K9A2 self-propelled howitzer at AUSA 2024

By Defence Industry Europe

Hanwha Defense USA (HDUSA) and its parent company Hanwha Aerospace will showcase the K9A2 Self-Propelled Howitzer at the Association of the U.S. Army’s (AUSA) Annual Meeting & Exposition.

The event is scheduled to take place from October 14 to 16 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C.

This will be the first time Hanwha is showcasing the K9A2 variant at the AUSA event, highlighting its advanced artillery capabilities.

The K9A2 features a 155mm/52-calibre system with a fully automatic handling system and an automatic turret, offering a rate of fire of 10 rounds per minute.

This represents a significant improvement over its predecessor, the K9A1, which has a firing rate of 6 to 8 rounds per minute.

The K9 series is renowned globally for its firepower, mobility, and battlefield survivability, with the ability to engage targets at ranges up to 40 kilometres using conventional ammunition.

With specialised extended projectiles, the K9A2 has demonstrated ranges exceeding 50 kilometres, making it one of the most effective self-propelled howitzers available.

Currently, about 2,000 K9 units, including various localized versions, are in service or production with ten countries, including Poland, Norway, Finland, Estonia, Australia, and Romania.

Hanwha’s presentation at the AUSA event will also emphasise its broader focus on interoperability and adaptability to meet the needs of modern armies.

Mike Smith, President and CEO of Hanwha Defense USA, stated that HDUSA aims to provide cost-effective combat capabilities that align with the urgent requirements of U.S. and Canadian forces.

Smith highlighted Hanwha’s proven track record in disciplined program execution and its focus on low-risk, long-range artillery solutions.
