Indra Group has demonstrated artificial intelligence that can interpret complex ground scenes, identify potential threats and recalculate safe routes during military operations. The capability was tested under FaRADAI, a European Defence Fund programme focused on robust, explainable AI that can operate with limited computing resources.

The system analyses ground-based imagery to identify vehicles, personnel and infrastructure. It can then assess relationships between detected objects to support threat evaluation and real-time decision-making.

Indra also demonstrated dynamic route generation for situations in which operational conditions change unexpectedly. The capability is designed to provide alternative safe routes while military operations are under way.

The technology uses a human-in-the-loop approach, keeping operators involved in critical decisions. Indra said AI is intended to support human judgement while improving transparency, confidence and security during military use.

FaRADAI, formally known as Frugal and Robust AI for Defence Advanced Intelligence, brings together 38 partners from 13 European countries. Established in 2022, the project is coordinated by the Hellenic Centre for Research and Technology and addresses decision-making under uncertainty, system resilience and human-machine collaboration.

Representatives from EU defence ministries and the European Commission reviewed the project’s findings in Thessaloniki, Greece. Indra led development of several critical use cases, including work focused on maintaining sensor performance in misleading operating conditions.

Indra is already applying AI to military vehicle situational-awareness systems, including its LSAS sensors and See-Through 360-degree vision technology. Its IndraMind platform can analyse imagery in real time, identify people and platforms, distinguish between friend and foe and assess threats to vehicle crews.

The company describes IndraMind as a sovereign and cyber-resilient AI platform supporting its broader defence strategy. Indra said FaRADAI forms part of its effort to strengthen European defence technology, industrial capacity and strategic autonomy.
