Industry welcomes EU leaders commitment to strengthening European defence capabilities

On 21 and 22 March, the European Union's heads of state and government gathered in Brussels to discuss matters of security and defence. The formal meeting of the European Council focused on enhancing the EU's defence readiness and capabilities. A notable outcome of the summit was the collective decision to reinforce the European defence technological and industrial base.

In a move aimed at bolstering the EU’s defence sector, the leaders have called for rapid progress on the Joint Communication on a European Defence Industrial Strategy (EDIS), a proposal initially put forth by the European Commission on 5 March.

Jan Pie, Secretary General of the Aerospace, Security and Defence Industries Association of Europe (ASD), expressed strong support for the council’s unanimous resolution to enhance European security and defence capabilities. He highlighted that the council’s conclusions address several industry concerns, including improved access to financing, incentives for joint development, procurement, investment, enhanced predictability through long-term contracts, a supportive regulatory framework, and reliable supply chains.

“We are pleased to see that in the conclusions, many of the industry’s concerns have been addressed such as better access to public and private finance, incentives for joint development, procurement and investment, better predictability for defence companies through long-term contracts, a more supportive regulatory environment and reliable supply chains,” he said.

Pie also emphasized the importance of quick action on EDIS and the European Defence Industrial Programme (EDIP), along with adjustments to the European Investment Bank’s lending policies. He pointed out that the responsibility for addressing many defence issues, such as increased spending and procurement decisions, primarily lies with EU member states. Pie urged EU leaders to expedite the implementation of these commitments to strengthen Europe’s defence industry.

“The European defence industry stands ready to support EU governments and institutions in this endeavour,” he said.
