This decision places Japan among 14 other nations that have integrated the T-6 Texan II into their military flight training programmes. With over 1,000 T-6 aircraft delivered worldwide, the platform is recognised for its cost-effective, reliable, and advanced training capabilities.
Textron Aviation Defense, a subsidiary of Textron Aviation Inc., worked in collaboration with Japan’s Kanematsu Group to secure the deal. The contract is expected to be finalised in 2025, marking a significant step towards improving JASDF’s pilot training efficiency.
The selection follows a highly competitive and detailed evaluation of multiple training aircraft proposals. JASDF’s decision highlights its confidence in the T-6 Texan II’s ability to prepare military pilots for the operational demands of the 21st century.
The Beechcraft T-6 Texan II ITS will provide JASDF with a comprehensive pilot training solution, incorporating advanced Ground-Based Training Systems (GBTS), instructor pilot and maintainer training, as well as long-term logistics and sustainment support. This modern approach is expected to enhance training effectiveness while reducing operational costs.
Travis Tyler, President and CEO of Textron Aviation Defense, expressed his confidence in the selection, stating that the T-6 Texan II ITS will ensure JASDF pilots are well-equipped for the future. He described the decision as an endorsement of the aircraft’s proven capabilities and long-term operational value.
The Beechcraft T-6 Texan II is widely regarded as the world’s leading military flight trainer, benefiting from over 90 years of aviation expertise. With more than 5 million flight hours logged globally, the aircraft continues to serve as the primary trainer for several NATO and international air forces.
Backed by a proven production line and a strong supply chain, the T-6 Texan II features 85% parts commonality with the Beechcraft AT-6E Wolverine, making it a cost-effective choice for military training programmes. Its low acquisition and maintenance costs allow air forces to streamline pilot training while maintaining high operational standards.
In addition to JASDF, the T-6 Texan II is used by the U.S. Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, Army, Coast Guard, and various allied nations. It is also a key component of international military flight training programmes, including the NATO flight school in Canada and the Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training Programme in Texas.
