The EUR 950 million agreement includes not only the advanced Leopard 2A8 tanks but also a comprehensive package of spare parts and logistical support. The procurement positions Lithuania as a leader in European defence integration, as it becomes the first country to implement the Leopard 2A8 purchase under the Common Procurement Agreement—a joint initiative with the Federal Republic of Germany aimed at bolstering Europe’s collective defence capability.
Lithuanian Defence Minister Dovilė Šakalienė finalised the Purchase Confirmation for the tanks in a signing ceremony attended by German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius. Speaking on the agreement, Šakalienė noted, “This procurement marks a significant milestone for Lithuania in strengthening its defence capabilities and its commitment to European security.”
The Leopard 2A8 tanks represent the latest in armoured vehicle technology. In addition to other state-of-the-art features, the tanks will be equipped with the APS TROPHY active protection system. This advanced system offers unparalleled 360° protection against modern threats such as shoulder-launched anti-tank missiles and drones. It has already been adopted by other NATO allies, including Norway and Germany, ensuring compatibility and enhanced interoperability.
The deal is seen as a significant contribution to Europe’s shared defence goals. With other nations reportedly planning to join the joint procurement project, the initiative underscores the growing emphasis on collaboration and modernisation among NATO allies.
KNDS Deutschland expressed pride in being part of Lithuania’s defence modernisation effort. “The delivery of the Leopard 2 A8 to Lithuania reflects our commitment to providing cutting-edge technology to strengthen NATO’s collective defence posture,” the company said in a press release.
