The shift reflects growing pressure on air forces to add capability while controlling readiness, affordability and sustainment costs. L3Harris said many nations are looking for platforms that can be fielded quickly, upgraded efficiently and supported over decades.
The company links that approach to its long experience with airborne intelligence aircraft, including the RC-135 Rivet Joint. L3Harris continues to sustain and modernize U.S. and U.K. RC-135 fleets through depot maintenance, mission systems integration and technology upgrades.
Missionized business jets are built on commercially proven aircraft, giving operators access to established supply chains and global support networks. L3Harris said that foundation can reduce lifecycle platform costs while allowing new sensors and mission systems to be integrated as requirements change.
The company said it has missionized aircraft for more than 70 years and has delivered thousands of airborne mission solutions across more than 100 aircraft types. Its work includes programs such as MC-55A Peregrine, ATHENA-R, ARES and EA-37B Compass Call.
L3Harris said the model also supports sovereign sustainment strategies through in-country partnerships. That can strengthen domestic industry, reduce foreign dependency and help customers maintain long-term control over mission systems and operational support.
Airborne early warning and control is one area where the company sees growing demand. L3Harris said air forces are seeking greater situational awareness and battle management capability that can fit into joint and coalition operations.
The company highlighted AERIS X as a high-altitude airborne early warning and control capability built on a missionized business jet foundation. It said the system combines advanced sensing, battle management functions and fifth-generation interoperability for contested environments.
AERIS X is designed to track high-speed and high-altitude missiles as well as low and slow unmanned threats, according to L3Harris. The company said the platform is intended to provide persistent air domain awareness while supporting sovereign operational requirements.
L3Harris said it has delivered more than 100 missionized business jets to date, more than all competitors combined. For customers, the company is positioning the aircraft type as a practical route to expand ISR, AEW&C and electronic attack capacity without moving to larger, more costly platforms.
