Latvia to acquire 18 Archer self-propelled artillery systems from Sweden

By Defence Industry Europe

On June 10, the Latvian Ministry of Defence signed a letter of intent with Sweden regarding the future supply of 18 Archer 8x8 wheeled artillery systems to the National Armed Forces. The agreement also envisages potential involvement of the Latvian defence industry in the supply chain.

The document outlines both countries’ mutual commitment to conclude an intergovernmental agreement at a later stage. Deliveries of the artillery systems are expected to begin in 2026.

“The agreement between Sweden and Latvia marks a significant step in closer defence cooperation between the two countries,” said Latvian Minister of Defence Andris Sprūds. “This partnership demonstrates our shared commitment to strengthening regional security and deterrence, especially in these geopolitically challenging times.”

The letter of intent was signed by Major General Andis Dilāns, Deputy State Secretary for Procurement of the Latvian Ministry of Defence, and Göran Mårtensson, Director of the Swedish National Armaments. It represents a formal step towards deepening bilateral military collaboration.

In addition to the planned delivery of 18 Archer systems, the agreement includes a commitment to explore the establishment of a joint 6×6 wheeled artillery unit. The letter also supports the implementation of joint training activities for Latvian and Swedish personnel, subject to further agreements between their armed forces.

Furthermore, the Swedish armed forces have committed to lease systems to Latvia until the newly acquired equipment is delivered. This interim measure is aimed at maintaining operational capability during the transition period.
