The selection was announced alongside Leonardo’s partners General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems and Diehl Defence. Leonardo said the decision reinforces its position as a design authority and reference point in guided artillery systems.
The ERAP program is intended to deliver a rapid, low-risk and mature solution for the U.S. Army. Leonardo said the effort is aimed at meeting urgent demand for long-range precision fires capable of operating in complex, GPS-contested environments.
The Vulcano 155mm combines an aerodynamic sub-caliber design with an advanced guidance suite. The system includes autonomous INS/GPS navigation and Semi-Active Laser terminal homing.
Leonardo said the munition enables standard 155mm/39-caliber artillery platforms, including the M109A7 howitzer, to engage stationary and moving targets. The company said targets can be engaged at ranges of up to 55 kilometers.
Leonardo said it is contributing expertise in precision guidance and warhead technology to the program. The company said the capability is intended to support strategic overmatch and precise effects for the U.S. warfighter while minimizing collateral damage.
