By Defence Industry Europe

Lithuania has officially confirmed the purchase of 44 Leopard 2A8 main battle tanks from German industry. The framework agreement was signed during a visit to Germany by Lithuania’s new Minister of National Defence, Dovilė Šakalienė, alongside German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius.

The Leopard 2A8 tanks, the latest version of the German-made system, were selected as the best option for Lithuania. Political factors, including the presence of the German Brigade Litauen stationed in Lithuania, significantly influenced the decision.

The acquisition is a critical part of Lithuania’s plan to establish a fully equipped division, filling a gap in its military capabilities. The Leopard 2A8 battalion will be integrated into the Iron Wolf Mechanised Brigade, a key unit within the Lithuanian Armed Forces.

While initial plans suggested Lithuania intended to procure 54 tanks, the final agreement reduced this number to 44. Specific details of the contract, including its total cost, delivery timeline, and potential inclusion of support vehicles, remain undisclosed.

Preliminary information indicates that the first tank company will be delivered in 2029. The entire battalion is expected to achieve full operational readiness by 2034, though earlier deliveries may be possible if additional funding becomes available.

This purchase marks Lithuania’s largest defence procurement to date and highlights its commitment to strengthening its military capabilities. The deal also deepens defence cooperation with Germany, a key NATO ally, amidst evolving regional security challenges.
