Lithuania orders Carl-Gustaf M4 multi-purpose weapon system from Saab

By Defence Industry Europe

Lithuania has taken a significant step in strengthening its national defence capabilities by signing a contract with Swedish company Saab. The EUR 14 million agreement, facilitated by the Defence Resources Agency under the Ministry of National Defence, secures the acquisition of Carl Gustaf M4 84mm recoilless rifles and their spare parts. The weaponry is set to be delivered between 2025 and 2026.

The Carl-Gustaf system is a versatile, combat-proven solution designed to provide troops with a tactical advantage in various combat scenarios. Its capabilities include neutralising armoured vehicles, engaging enemy troops in defilade, clearing obstacles, and targeting enemies in urban settings. Developed through decades of innovation, the M4 version offers critical improvements in speed and manoeuvrability, essential for success on the modern battlefield.

At less than one metre in length and weighing under seven kilograms, the Carl-Gustaf M4 is significantly lighter and more compact than its predecessors. These features allow soldiers to react faster and maintain agility in high-pressure combat situations. The M4 is compatible with advanced fire control devices and programmable ammunition, ensuring that troops have access to cutting-edge technology. It is also backward-compatible with all legacy Carl-Gustaf ammunition, providing operational flexibility.

The M4 can be equipped with a variety of sights, including a standard clip-on telescopic sight, red dot sight, open sight, and advanced fire control devices. This adaptability maximises effectiveness in diverse tactical scenarios and caters to the needs of individual operators. The range of ammunition for the Carl-Gustaf system is equally versatile, covering anti-armour, anti-structure, and anti-personnel munitions. Additional options such as illumination rounds for night operations and smoke rounds for screening or blinding targets further enhance battlefield effectiveness.

Saab also supports the system with robust training programs, offering sub-calibre and full-calibre practice rounds within advanced simulators for indoor and outdoor settings. This ensures troops are fully prepared to utilise the weapon in real-world conditions. Maintenance kits, spare parts, and tools are included with the system, enabling daily upkeep and repairs during extended operations.
