Lithuania to invest EUR 1.2 billion in modern soldier program over next decade

By Defence Industry Europe

Lithuania has announced plans to significantly enhance its military capabilities, with a substantial investment of up to EUR 1.2 billion over the next decade. The Defence Minister, Laurynas Kasčiūnas, outlined the ambitious plans on Friday during a presentation at the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas Staff Battalion, detailing the acquisitions under the nation's modern soldier program.

Kasčiūnas highlighted that nearly EUR 30 million will be allocated between 2025 and 2027 for various equipment, clothing, and weaponry. The total investment is expected to reach EUR 1.2 billion by 2034 as part of Lithuania’s ongoing efforts to strengthen and accelerate the implementation of the modern soldier program.

The Lithuanian government recently allocated an additional EUR 130 million towards defence, with EUR 20 million specifically designated for equipping soldiers with individual weapons under the modern soldier program. The additional funding will be used to procure FN MINIMI 7.62 MK3 light machine guns, night vision devices, laser sights, and other essential equipment.

In July, a related procurement saw the Lithuanian military acquiring BROLIS LP5X close combat laser sights for approximately EUR 22 million. The first of these sights are expected to be delivered this year, with the remainder arriving by 2026.

The Chief of Defence, General Raimundas Vaikšnoras, explained that the modern soldier program is divided into three main components: weapons, equipment, and clothing. He emphasised that the ongoing improvements ensure that soldiers are well-equipped to perform their duties effectively.

Defence Minister Kasčiūnas noted that equipping a single soldier with the necessary items costs between EUR 19,400 and EUR 37,200. Some of the procured equipment will be used to outfit reserve troops and for stockpiling purposes, ensuring that Lithuania remains prepared for any potential future challenges.
