Lockheed Martin’s Polish subsidiary PZL Mielec will manufacture wiring harnesses for the F-35, with the first delivery planned for July 2027. The plant is targeting annual production of approximately 13,000 harnesses and will also take on work producing cockpit structures for UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters.

The F-35 programme covers 287 harness types using conventional electrical connections and fibre-optic technology. At the target annual output, production will require the assembly of more than 90,000 connectors and thousands of assembly, inspection and testing operations.

“Including PZL Mielec in the global F-35 programme marks an important milestone in our history and reflects Lockheed Martin’s continued investment in the Polish aviation industry,” said Janusz Zakręcki, president and general director of PZL Mielec. “The F-35 is the most advanced multirole aircraft in the world, and locating production of its components in Mielec is a significant achievement for our company and our employees.”

The harnesses distribute power and transmit signals between the aircraft’s onboard systems. Their manufacture will require fibre-optic production and testing technologies, high-speed data transmission solutions and measures to protect transmitted information.

The work is subject to stringent quality, configuration and traceability requirements because of its use in a modern military aircraft. Preparations include expanding production infrastructure, investing in equipment and developing the skills of manufacturing and quality teams.

Poland’s Industrial Development Agency has granted PZL Mielec a support decision allowing an income tax exemption worth up to approximately PLN 17 million. The decision, issued under the Polish Investment Zone framework, will help the company prepare for both new programmes.

PZL Mielec said the investment would diversify its production and create jobs, without specifying an employment figure. The F-35 harness programme is scheduled to enter its production phase during 2027–2029.
