By Defence Industry Europe

On August 9, the keel-laying ceremony for the first F110-class frigate for the Armada Española, designated as the future "Bonifaz" (F111), took place at the Navantia shipyard in Ferrol.

The initial cutting and shaping of metal sheets for the ship occurred earlier this year in April. The Spanish authorities anticipate the frigate’s launch in 2025, with its integration into the navy expected in 2028. The remaining five F110-class frigates are scheduled for delivery annually, concluding by 2032.

Commencement of the construction for the second unit, the future “Roger de Lauria” (F112), is planned for later this year. These new ships will replace the Santa María-class frigates, which have served for decades. Over a span of more than 10 years during the implementation of the F110-class frigate program, the endeavor will secure employment for approximately 9,000 individuals and involve around 500 Spanish companies. The undertaking operates under a contract established in 2019, valued at over EUR 4.32 billion.
