Dutch MQ-9 Reapers have supported so-called Air Shielding operations since early 2024, operating from Romania along the eastern border of NATO treaty territory to collect data and information that help build a comprehensive situational picture. The mission, originally due to end in March, has been extended by half a year following consultations with Romania and NATO.

“The terror of Russia in Ukraine continues, for almost four years now. However, the Russian threat extends further, also to the rest of Europe. That means we must be and remain extremely vigilant. Defence of the eastern flank is of great importance for the security of Europe and therefore also of the Netherlands. Our advanced MQ-9 Reapers play a crucial role in this. In doing so, we are strengthening NATO’s intelligence position. This means we can anticipate better,” Brekelmans said.

The MQ-9 Reapers are operated from the Netherlands by Royal Netherlands Air Force personnel, with intelligence processing also conducted domestically. Additional military personnel are stationed in Romania to maintain and guard the aircraft, the ministry said.
