Northrop Grumman develops Cannon-Based Air Defence (CBAD) system [VIDEO]

By Defence Industry Europe

Northrop Grumman has recently announced the start of development on a new Cannon-Based Air Defence (CBAD) system, aimed at addressing the growing threat posed by large-scale aerial attacks. This innovative system will feature Bushmaster Chain Guns paired with advanced ammunition, offering a cost-effective solution to combat a wide range of aerial threats, including swarms of unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and cruise missiles.

As adversaries continue to enhance their aerial capabilities, the potential for larger and more sophisticated raids targeting critical infrastructure and military bases has significantly increased. Northrop Grumman’s CBAD system is being developed to provide a scalable and resilient defence against these mass air threats.

The CBAD system will integrate advanced sensors, battle management command and control, along with battle-proven cannon technology and cutting-edge ammunition. This combination is designed to offer robust protection against subsonic cruise missiles and unmanned aircraft systems from the very start of any conflict. Traditional long-range interceptor missiles are becoming less cost-effective as adversaries deploy cheaper, expendable technologies in greater numbers. The CBAD system seeks to address this challenge by providing an affordable, layered terminal defence solution.
