The multiple-year contract supports requirements for both the U.S. Army and international partners. Northrop Grumman said the award reinforces its commitment to readiness and innovation in munitions.
The M1147 AMP is a next-generation large caliber tank round designed to combine the capabilities of four legacy rounds into one munition. The company said the round is intended to give Abrams crews greater flexibility against different target sets.
The round uses a multi-mode programmable fuze. It can operate in point-detonate, point-detonate delay and airburst modes, enabling it to engage a variety of targets.
Dave Fine, vice president, armament systems, Northrop Grumman, said: “With its enhanced functionality, the M1147 AMP meets the Army’s needs for efficiency and readiness, while enhancing the lethality of the Abrams Main Battle Tank. This capability enables unmatched mission flexibility by empowering forces to adapt instantly to any threat.”
Northrop Grumman said its work in the design, development and production of large caliber ammunition spans more than 45 years. During that period, the company has delivered more than five million large caliber tactical and training rounds.
Those rounds have been supplied to the U.S. Army, U.S. Marine Corps and allied militaries around the world. The company said the new contract continues that production role in support of armored force readiness.
