Northrop Grumman has finalized procurement terms for an additional 12 shipsets of Virginia-class Block VI submarine propulsion equipment, adding $1.4 billion to its backlog, Chief Executive Kathy Warden said. The award supports the company’s partnership with the U.S. Navy through 2032.

The order covers main propulsion units and ship service turbine generators, Warden told analysts during Northrop’s October 20 earnings call. She identified the company’s support for shipbuilding as a source of future growth alongside the B-21 bomber and Sentinel missile programs.

“We also definitized the Virginia-class Block VI submarine procurement for an additional 12 shipsets of main propulsion units and ship service turbine generators,” Warden said. “The award value adds $1.4 billion to backlog, supporting our partnership with the Navy through 2032.”

Chief Financial Officer John Greene said higher marine systems volumes contributed to a 2% increase in third-quarter sales at Northrop’s Mission Systems division. Increased activity on restricted airborne radar programs also helped drive that growth.

The submarine equipment award comes as Northrop’s total backlog reached a record $110 billion during the quarter. Warden said existing contracts and backlog gave the company strong visibility through 2028, while the timing of government appropriations and new contracts would influence its growth.
