Overland AI reveals ULTRA: autonomous tactical vehicle for challenging ground missions

By Defence Industry Europe

Seattle-based defence technology company Overland AI has unveiled ULTRA, a fully autonomous tactical ground vehicle designed for complex military environments. The launch marks a major step forward in autonomous ground systems, combining Overland AI's OverDrive software, SPARK hardware infrastructure, and modular payload options.

ULTRA is capable of operating in diverse terrains, from dense forests to volcanic ridges, with no need for GPS or direct operator control. “ULTRA can navigate environments ranging from dense forests to volcanic ridges,” said Byron Boots, co-founder and chief executive officer of Overland AI. “This empowers the warfighter to win in crucial contested theaters like the Indo-Pacific while keeping them out of harm’s way.”

With a payload capacity of 1,000 pounds, a top speed of 35 miles per hour, and a cruising range of 100 miles, ULTRA is built for endurance and heavy-duty missions. Its off-road autonomy was developed through rigorous testing in the DARPA RACER programme, ensuring reliable performance in harsh and GPS-denied conditions.

The vehicle is engineered for versatility, supporting a wide range of missions such as reconnaissance, counter-uncrewed aerial system (UAS) operations, humanitarian aid resupply, and contested logistics. Integrated communications systems enable real-time coordination via local mesh networks, 5G, and satellite links.

“ULTRA gives commanders an immediately deployable solution for reconnaissance, counter-UAS, and logistics operations,” said Greg Okopal, co-founder and chief operating officer of Overland AI. “The vehicle is backed by resilient, networked communications that extend reach and reduce risk.”

Overland AI is currently under contract with the U.S. Army and Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) for the Robotic Combat Vehicle (RCV) programme. The company also continues to support projects for the U.S. Army, Marine Corps, and Special Operations Command.

Founded in 2022, Overland AI specialises in advanced autonomy solutions for defence ground operations. Its technologies are designed for hazardous and electronically denied environments, enabling mission success through reliable, uncrewed mobility.
