Poland and U.S. strengthen defence ties with new loan agreement

Poland has signed a direct loan agreement with the United States under the Foreign Military Financing (FMF) programme, as reported by Poland’s Ministry of National Defence. This agreement will facilitate Poland's acquisition of advanced air and missile defence systems from the U.S., enhancing the nation’s defensive infrastructure.

The Polish Ministry of National Defence highlighted that this marks the second loan extended by the U.S. government to Poland in recent times. The FMF funds are designated exclusively for select U.S. allies, reflecting the close defence cooperation between the two nations.

According to the ministry, the favourable terms of this agreement signify the ever-strengthening strategic relationship between Poland and the United States. “The United States remains our main foreign partner in the modernization of the Polish Armed Forces, including the acquisition of Patriot and HIMARS air defence systems, Abrams tanks, and F-35 aircraft,” the ministry stated.

Moreover, the presence of American troops in Poland is seen as a continual reinforcement of Polish deterrence and defence capabilities. The ministry underscored that U.S. military support plays a crucial role in safeguarding Poland’s security interests.

The ministry also emphasized the importance of bilateral cooperation in supporting Ukraine, highlighting it as a vital aspect of the Poland-U.S. relationship. This cooperation underscores the shared commitment of both nations to regional stability and collective defence.
