Rolls-Royce introduces advanced mtu power and automation solutions for next-generation submarines

By Defence Industry Europe

Rolls-Royce has announced the development of new concepts aimed at supporting navies in meeting the increasing challenges of undersea defence. These innovations include a more powerful mtu submarine charging unit and advanced mtu NautIQ automation systems for underwater vessel control.

Modern submarines require greater electrical power than older models, driven by the increasing complexity of onboard electronic systems and advanced battery storage technology that allows faster charging. Rolls-Royce addresses these needs with a high-capacity onboard power generator, powered by a future 20-cylinder version of the mtu Series 4000 engine.

The new 20-cylinder engine, an extension of the widely used 12-cylinder model, will offer a higher power output, enabling faster battery charging and reduced surface time. Its compact design also allows for more efficient use of space, potentially replacing three smaller gensets with two of the larger units. This design includes modified charge air and combustion systems to make submarines less detectable, adding a strategic advantage.

A study by Rolls-Royce has confirmed that this charging unit can be integrated effectively into modern submarine designs. This positions the company to respond to the changing demands of naval engineering with versatile, high-performing power solutions.

The mtu NautIQ Master automation system extends Rolls-Royce’s capabilities to integrated control and monitoring for sub-surface platforms. This system manages propulsion and power supply, monitors unit conditions, and can be enhanced with modules for damage control, training, and communication, all controlled via a standardised interface.

Previously successful in naval surface vessels, the mtu NautIQ Master system is now being adapted for use in submarines. This marks a significant step for Rolls-Royce, transitioning from being a component supplier to a comprehensive solution provider in the submarine market.
