Romania moves closer to USD 6.5 billion deal for F-35 fighter jets

By Defence Industry Europe

Romania's process of acquiring 32 F-35 fighter jets continues to progress as the country's Ministry of National Defence has formally requested the necessary funds to finalise the deal. The allocation of these funds represents the final step before officially commencing the purchase through an agreement with the United States government under its Foreign Military Sales (FMS) programme.

The Romanian Ministry of National Defence estimates that the contract could be signed by next autumn, pending approval from US authorities. However, the first aircraft are not expected to arrive in Romania until 2030, according to Defence Minister Angel Tîlvăr.

The estimated value of the deal is USD 6.5 billion for the 32 aircraft, excluding indirect taxes. This figure, initially presented by the Ministry of Defence to the Romanian Parliament last year, equates to a cost of just over EUR 183 million per aircraft at the current exchange rate. The total sum covers not only the acquisition of the jets but also includes ammunition, various logistics and training services, and flight simulators.

Additionally, a proposal approved by the Romanian Supreme Defence Council (CSAT) last September includes an option for a second batch of 16 aircraft, which would bring the total fleet to 48 fighter jets.

Sources from the Romanian Ministry of National Defence have indicated there is a strong possibility of positive news regarding the contract this year, suggesting the potential signing of the agreement.

In the meantime, Bucharest has been strengthening its air force with the acquisition of second-hand F-16 fighter jets, initially purchased from Portugal (17) and more recently from Norway (32).
