Earlier this year, in February, real estate company Niam signed a long-term lease agreement with Saab for 15,000 square metres of industrial space at the site. According to Saab, the facility will focus on the production of steel components, including welding and sheet metal processing, primarily for two A26 Blekinge-class submarines under construction for the Swedish Navy.
The submarines, HMS Blekinge and HMS Skåne, were commissioned by Sweden’s Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) in March 2015, under a contract worth approximately SEK 8 billion. Originally planned for completion in 2022 and 2023, the projects have faced delays and required renegotiations of the terms.
A 2021 addendum to the original agreement extended the production timeline and adjusted the cost. As per the revised schedule, HMS Blekinge is expected to be delivered in 2027, with HMS Skåne following in 2028. The keel for HMS Blekinge was laid in June 2022 at Saab Kockums’ shipyard in Karlskrona.
The Landskrona facility represents a critical step in Saab’s strategy to enhance its production capabilities while fulfilling Sweden’s defence modernisation objectives. The A26 Blekinge-class submarines are designed for advanced stealth and operational versatility, reflecting a significant advancement in naval technology.
