Saab has secured a major order from TKMS to deliver and integrate combat systems, sensors and composite structures for four new German Navy MEKO A-200 DEU class frigates. The contract is valued at approximately SEK 8.7 billion, with Saab deliveries to the German naval defence company scheduled between 2029 and 2032.

The frigates will be built in Germany, where TKMS will act as prime contractor. The agreement also includes an option for Saab to integrate and equip additional frigates, giving the programme potential scope beyond the initial four ships.

The order expands Saab’s role in a German naval modernisation effort focused on strengthening the fleet’s ability to operate across air, surface and underwater threat environments. For Saab, the deal also reinforces its long-standing defence relationship with Germany and the Bundeswehr.

“It is with great pride that we continue to build on our long and strong relationship and commitment to Germany and the Bundeswehr, while together with TKMS strengthening the German Navy. These deliveries will significantly enhance the Navy’s anti-air-, anti-submarine- and anti-surface warfare capabilities,” said Micael Johansson, CEO and President of Saab.

Under the contract, Saab will equip the frigates with composite superstructures and its 9LV Combat Systems. The package includes both the Fire Control System and Combat Management System, which form part of the ships’ combat system architecture.

Saab will also supply sensors including the Sea Giraffe 4A Fixed Face long-range surveillance radar and the Sea Giraffe 1X lightweight multi-mission surveillance radar. The order further covers passive sensors, adding to the surveillance and combat capabilities planned for the new German frigates.

The programme places Saab alongside TKMS in one of Germany’s key naval procurement efforts over the next decade. With production in Germany and deliveries from Saab running from 2029 to 2032, the contract links Swedish combat-system technology with German frigate construction for the future German Navy fleet.
