This support is aimed at enhancing Ukraine’s defence against ongoing Russian aggression and ensuring long-term stability. The aid will include donations of defence equipment, financial contributions, and economic support for procuring defence materiel.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson affirmed Sweden’s commitment, stating, “Sweden stands with Ukraine for as long as necessary.” Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson highlighted that this framework, while deviating from the usual surplus target, ensures that Sweden’s national defence build-up and other essential reforms are not compromised.
Since Russia’s invasion in February 2022, Sweden has provided SEK 37 billion in support to Ukraine, making it the country’s largest recipient of development assistance. This new framework brings Sweden’s total military and civilian support to over SEK 100 billion.
The commitment reflects Sweden’s dedication to regional stability and the defence of democratic values amidst Europe’s most precarious security situation since World War II.
