Switzerland joins EU PESCO project “Cyber Ranges Federation” to enhance cyber defence training

By Defence Industry Europe

Switzerland will participate in the European Union’s Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO) project “Cyber Ranges Federation” (CRF), following approval by the EU Council on 20 May 2025. The initiative aims to link national cyber training infrastructures across Europe to enable realistic, advanced, and efficient training in cyber defence.

By joining the CRF, Switzerland seeks to expand international cooperation, support technology testing, and enhance the virtual training environment for its Armed Forces. This participation will be selective and needs-based, using the Swiss Cyber Training Range.

Alongside the CRF, Switzerland will also engage in the PESCO project “Military Mobility”, which focuses on simplifying cross-border military transport procedures. Both projects are intended to improve interoperability and strengthen the operational readiness of the Swiss Armed Forces.

Switzerland’s involvement in these initiatives was approved by the Federal Council on 21 August 2024. The cooperation will be governed by a non-binding administrative arrangement, in line with Switzerland’s neutrality obligations.

PESCO was established by the Council of the European Union in 2017 to enhance defence capabilities among member states through joint training and armament projects. At present, 26 out of 27 EU member states participate in more than 60 PESCO projects.
