The FMBTech initiative is co-funded by the European Commission under the 2023 edition of the European Defence Fund (EDF), alongside contributions from the consortium. With a total budget of EUR 19 million, the project is set to run for three years and aims to develop modular, adaptable solutions for both current and future MBTs.
The goal of FMBTech is to address the operational limitations of ageing armoured fleets while preparing for more complex hybrid warfare environments. By integrating cutting-edge “technology bricks”, the initiative seeks to create MBTs that are agile, intelligent, and cooperative on the battlefield.
Thales stated that FMBTech will “reinforce military innovation and collaboration within European defence”, and will ensure that MBTs remain effective, safe, and cost-efficient assets. The project also aims to pave the way for the emergence of fifth-generation MBT capabilities.
The consortium includes eight small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and seven Research and Technology Organisations (RTOs), highlighting the EDF’s commitment to fostering defence cooperation across sectors. According to the European Commission, the EDF supports initiatives that promote interoperability and the development of advanced defence technologies throughout the Union.
