Thales has been awarded a contract to supply Albania with a Ground Master 400 Alpha (GM400α) air surveillance radar, with delivery scheduled within 14 months. The announcement was made at the Paris Air Show in the presence of French Armed Forces Minister Sébastien Lecornu and Albanian Defence Minister Pirro Vengu.

The GM400α radar is recognised globally for its high mobility, exceptional reliability, and superior performance, providing a crucial tool for airspace monitoring. It supports the development of a reliable and up-to-date Recognised Air Picture (RAP), essential for airspace sovereignty and situational awareness.

“With our increased production capacity and support from our partner eco-system, we are able to have fast turnaround times with regards to urgent operational requests,” said Eric Huber, Vice President, Surface Radars, Thales. “The Ground Master 400 Alpha provides a reliable, high-performance, high-mobility capability to meet Albania’s air surveillance and sovereignty needs.”

The radar system features a fully digital architecture and can track aerial threats up to 515 km away, including low-altitude and slow-moving targets such as unmanned aerial vehicles. It has been deployed worldwide and is considered one of the highest-performing systems in its class.

Over the past year, Thales has tripled production capacity for its Ground Master radar family in France to address growing global demand and urgent operational requirements. To date, more than 270 Ground Master radars have been sold globally, reinforcing Thales’ position as a trusted provider of advanced air surveillance solutions.
