In January 2023, Poland signed a contract with the US government for the purchase of a total of 116 M1A1 Abrams tanks. The contract also includes 12 M88A2 Hercules vehicles, eight M1074 Joint Assault Bridges, six M557 command vehicles, and 26 HMMWV vehicles.
The Polish government has decided to purchase used M1A1 Abrams tanks to replenish the tanks in the arsenal of the Polish land forces, which resulted from the transfer of a significant number of tanks (T-70, T-90, and Leopard 2A4) to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The contract also includes the supply of tank ammunition and a training and logistics package.
Furthermore, in April 2022, Poland also signed a contract for the purchase of 250 brand new M1A2 Abrams SEPv3 tanks. They are scheduled to be delivered to Poland in 2025-2026.
