Turkey: maiden flight of Kaan fifth-generation fighter [VIDEO]

By Defence Industry Europe

The first fifth-generation fighter jet developed by Turkey, named Kaan, successfully completed its maiden flight on February 21, 2024. Under the guidance of Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) and piloted by a seasoned Turkish Air Force pilot, the flight marks a significant milestone in the country's defence manufacturing prowess.

The Kaan jet, a product of extensive research and development efforts initiated in 2010, took to the skies reaching an altitude of 8,000 feet (2,400 meters) and achieved a speed of 230 knots (425 kilometers per hour) during an 11-minute flight.

This test flight underscores the aircraft’s advanced design and capabilities, including low-observability, internal and external weapons carriage, an active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar system, supercruise ability, and state-of-the-art data link features.

Designed to fulfill the strategic needs of the Turkish Armed Forces, the Kaan fighter jet represents a leap forward in Turkey’s ambition to modernize its fighter fleet and bolster national defence.

The program gained momentum after 2019, following Turkey’s exclusion from the F-35 Lightning II program, propelling the nation towards self-reliance in military aviation technology.
