U.S. approves Romania’s request to purchase new Patriot PAC-3+ fire unit to replace donated system

By Defence Industry Europe

On 28 April, the U.S. Department of State approved Romania’s request for the possible purchase of components for a new Patriot PAC-3+ fire unit, which may replace the system previously transferred to Ukraine. This approval is a key step in the federal authorisation process and the documentation has now been submitted to the U.S. Congress and made public.

According to the request, Romania is seeking to acquire one AN/MPQ-65 radar station, one AN/MSQ-132 fire control unit, two M903 launchers, and one EPP III mobile generator. The package also includes launcher modification kits, spare parts, vehicles, and training and logistics support.

The total value of the proposed sale is estimated at a maximum of USD 280 million, although the final amount may be lower. As part of the compensation for the system transferred to Ukraine, the U.S. may offer a significant discount or finance the purchase through military assistance funds.

After donating one of its systems to Ukraine, Romania currently has three remaining Patriot fire units. Deliveries of these systems began in September 2020, following an order placed in 2017.

Unlike countries such as Sweden and Poland, Romanian authorities opted for the standard U.S. Army configuration, which includes typical American vehicles and tractor units. In addition to the replacement unit, Bucharest intends to purchase three more systems to equip the Land Forces.
