U.S. Army awards USD 4.19 billion aerostat contract to Raytheon, Leidos, Qinetiq, TCOM, Tyonek, and five other firms

By Defence Industry Europe

The U.S. Army has awarded a 10-year Multiple Award Task Order Contract (MATOC) worth $4,193,327,540 to ten industry partners for the provision of aerostat systems and associated services. This contract supports the Product Director Aerostats Production office and covers hardware procurement, fielding, sustainment, life cycle support, and replenishment of U.S. military stocks.

Task orders under the MATOC will include engineering, logistics, operations, and programme management services to bolster intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) efforts. The aerostat systems are designed to support ongoing and future defence operations both in the United States and overseas.

“This award is instrumental for ongoing and future intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance [ISR] operations that support the Warfighter,” said Lareina Adams, Project Manager for Terrestrial Sensors. “As demand signals continue to increase, aerostat systems will be key in delivering persistent capabilities worldwide.”

The Persistent Surveillance System – Tethered (PSS-T), which forms part of the contract, is a multi-sensor platform used in overseas contingency operations and prepositioned Army stock. These systems offer continuous information-gathering capabilities and can integrate with other sensor technologies for real-time threat detection.

In addition to aerostat support, the MATOC will fund services for the Persistent Surveillance Dissemination System of Systems (PSDS2), a programme that networks video and data sensors into a shared system. This enables the rapid delivery of intelligence to support field operations and decision-making.

The MATOC includes provisions for future adaptation, allowing vendors to be added or removed in response to the Army’s evolving operational needs. It ensures the long-term readiness and technological advancement of surveillance capabilities across joint, inter-agency, and multinational missions.

The ten companies awarded Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contracts include Advanced Technology Systems Company, Elevated Technologies, Leidos Inc., Mission Solutions Group, Qinetiq Inc., Raytheon Company, Skyship Services Inc., TCOM LLC, Thunderbolt Software, and Tyonek Technical Services LLC.
