U.S. Army demonstrates Black Hawk air-launched effects and long-range precision munition at Project Convergence Capstone 6

The U.S. Army demonstrated an H-60M Black Hawk launching and controlling multiple air-launched effects during Project Convergence Capstone 6 in July. The three-day flight campaign advanced a networked capability intended to extend the helicopter’s reach in contested airspace.

The demonstration in California’s Mojave Desert followed testing at A.P. Hill, Virginia, in June. Aircrews operated multiple launched effects despite intense heat, testing the system’s environmental resilience.

The Increment 1 capability is fully designed and owned by the U.S. government. It was developed through cooperation between the Utility Helicopters Project Office and the DEVCOM Aviation and Missile Center.

The configuration allows an H-60M to launch and control multiple effects through a fully networked system. Army technical programmes and commercial industry partners supported its integration and testing.

“It’s truly remarkable when dedicated Americans from government and industry collaborate to deliver results,” said Dr. Stephanie Reitmeier, Director for DEVCOM AvMC Maneuver Air Directorate and Maneuver Air System Center. “Moving with speed and embracing experimentation as a unified team is driving transformational change across Army capabilities.”

The event also accelerated the Long-Range Precision Munition, the lethal variant of the Army’s Launched Effects programme. Managed by the Capability Program Executive for Offensive Fires, LRPM provides autonomy, one-to-many control and the ability to concentrate fires on a target.

Soldiers and allied partners examined the modified aircraft and engaged directly with programme specialists. The Army said the configuration could help ground units penetrate contested airspace while the Black Hawk maintains stand-off distance.

“Successfully launching Air-Launched Effects from a Black Hawk is more than a milestone, it is a leap forward,” said Brig. Gen. Kevin Chaney, Deputy Portfolio Acquisition Executive for Maneuver Air. “By extending their reach and increasing lethality, we are changing the battlefield geometry and delivering a decisive advantage to our Soldiers.”

The modified H-60M also serves as a communications gateway between aviation and ground forces. Its networking capability supports battlespace management and over-the-horizon communications between air and ground assets.

The Army plans further testing and evaluation to mature the Black Hawk’s air-launched effects capability. The work is intended to improve the platform’s lethality and survivability during large-scale combat operations.
