U.S. Army tests airborne brigade for modern war in Germany, deploying drones, robots and AI alongside forces from 10 nations

The U.S. Army is using Saber Junction 26 to test whether the 173rd Airborne Brigade can deploy rapidly and sustain large-scale combat operations in Europe. More than 2,300 brigade paratroopers are training with over 2,100 allied and partner troops at the Joint Multinational Readiness Center in Hohenfels, Germany.

U.S. Army Southern European Task Force, Africa is directing the rotation as its division-level headquarters. The event is intended to validate combat readiness, improve NATO interoperability and prepare participating formations for operations across the European theater.

The 173rd is being assessed on joint forcible entry, offensive and defensive operations, and its ability to regenerate combat power in a contested environment. Scenarios also test how the brigade operates under electronic attack, with disrupted communications and across dispersed formations.

Unmanned aircraft systems are playing a prominent role in the training, reflecting lessons drawn from ongoing conflicts. The rotation also incorporates electronic warfare and decision-making under conditions designed to resemble a modern battlefield.

“Saber Junction is where our soldiers and our allies prove they are ready for the demands of modern war,” said Army Maj. Gen. Matthew W. Brown, commander of Southern European Task Force, Africa. “This rotation is a crucible event — designed to expose gaps, accelerate learning and ensure that formations are trained and lethal.”

Southern European Task Force, Africa is integrating American and allied formations while issuing division orders and maintaining a shared operating picture. The headquarters is also rehearsing mission command for potential operations across Europe and Africa.

The rotation provides an operational test for technologies developed by the 173rd Airborne Brigade’s Bayonet Innovation Team. The internal cell brings together paratroopers, engineers, warrant officers and technical specialists to design and field low-cost equipment.

Its projects include first-person-view drones, intelligence and surveillance platforms, ground robots and artificial intelligence-enabled tools. The team can manufacture drones at its own facility and uses lessons from Ukraine, previous Hohenfels rotations and multinational training to refine its work.

“Our standards are nonnegotiable: disciplined, lethal and relentless,” said Army Col. Mark E. Bush, commander of the 173rd Airborne Brigade. “This exercise validates our ability to deploy at the time of need, fight and succeed regardless of the mission environment or enemy capability and posture the brigade for future operations.”

Participating forces come from Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Kosovo, Lithuania, Poland, Ukraine and the United States. The Army said the rotation is intended to speed combined decision-making and improve interoperability among forces operating across Europe.
