U.S. clears possible USD 6.7 billion sale of aerial bombs and munitions to Israel

The U.S. State Department has approved a possible Foreign Military Sale to Israel, which includes munitions, guidance kits, fuzes, and related support equipment, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) said on Thursday. The estimated value of the proposed sale is USD 6.75 billion, and Congress has been formally notified.

Israel has requested 2,166 GBU-39/B Small Diameter Bombs (SDB-I), 2,800 MK 82 general-purpose bomb bodies, and 13,000 Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) guidance kits for MK-84 bomb bodies. The package also includes 3,475 JDAM guidance kits for BLU-109 bomb bodies, 1,004 JDAM guidance kits for GBU-38v1 bombs, and 17,475 FMU-152A/B fuzes.

Additional non-major defence equipment (non-MDE) in the sale includes FMU-139 fuzes, bomb components, munitions support, and related logistical elements. Deliveries are expected to begin in 2025, according to the DSCA.

The U.S. government said the proposed sale is consistent with its policy of supporting Israel’s ability to maintain a strong self-defence capability. It stated that the sale would enhance Israel’s capacity to address current and emerging security challenges and act as a deterrent in the region.

The munitions will be sourced from U.S. stockpiles, where available, and from defence contractors, including Boeing, ATK Tactical Systems, L3Harris Fuzing and Ordnance Systems, and McAlester Army Ammunition Plant. Israel already operates similar equipment and is expected to integrate the new weapons without difficulty.
