The U.S. State Department said on Nov. 6 it had approved a possible sale of up to 11 UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters to Mexico, with the package valued at up to $1.1 billion. Mexico wants the aircraft for operations against drug cartels, disaster response and search-and-rescue missions.

Lockheed Martin would be the prime contractor if the two governments sign a Letter of Offer and Acceptance. Mexico’s request covers five spare T700-GE-701D engines as well as spare parts, training and logistics support.

The proposed package includes additional AN/ARS-231A radios and Eagle-M systems that combine GPS and inertial navigation. It also includes MX-10D electro-optical sensor turrets and M-134 machine guns.

Mexico operates about 30 Black Hawks across its air force, navy and National Guard. The National Guard’s helicopters were transferred from the Federal Police.

Deliveries began in 2012, and Washington funded the purchase of some aircraft supplied to the Federal Police. Mexico has lost at least five Black Hawks since deliveries began.
