United States approves USD 2.7 billion urgent sale of aerial munitions to Israel

By Defence Industry Europe

The United States has approved an urgent sale of aerial munitions to Israel, totalling over 44,500 bomb bodies and precision-guided JDAM kits. The decision, announced on 28 February by the U.S. State Department, bypasses the usual congressional approval process due to what has been described as an "extraordinary situation."

The Israeli government had requested the purchase of 35,529 Mk 84 or BLU-117 general-purpose bomb bodies, as well as 4,000 I-2000 penetrating warheads. The deal also includes spare parts, consumables, accessories, and logistical support provided by both the U.S. government and private companies.

The estimated total cost of this transaction is USD 2.04 billion, with initial deliveries expected to begin in 2026. In addition to this, a second request was approved for the purchase of 201 Mk 83 MOD 4/MOD 5 bomb bodies and 4,799 BLU-110A/B bomb bodies.

This second transaction also includes 1,500 KMU-559C/B JDAM guidance kits for Mk 83 bomb bodies and 3,500 KMU-559J/B JDAM kits for the same type of bombs. The estimated cost of this package is USD 675.7 million, with deliveries anticipated to start in 2028.

The U.S. Secretary of State justified the decision by citing national security interests and the need for immediate action. The exemption from congressional approval was made under the U.S. Arms Export Control Act, which allows expedited arms sales in emergencies.

The United States reiterated its commitment to Israel’s security, stating that supporting Israel’s ability to defend itself remains a key priority. The move aligns with longstanding U.S. policy to ensure Israel maintains its military capabilities amid ongoing regional tensions.
