USS Mount Whitney became the first U.S. warship to organically integrate and operate Link 22 while underway in the Baltic region during Baltic Operations 2026, the U.S. Navy said. The command ship used the upgraded tactical data link while operating in the Baltic Sea with Germany’s FGS Hamburg.

Link 22 is a beyond-line-of-sight communications suite designed to give U.S. and NATO forces a more comprehensive tactical picture. The Navy said the system supports faster threat identification, better-informed decision-making and stronger coalition interoperability.

The software had been upgraded in March 2026 before being used between Mount Whitney and FGS Hamburg during BALTOPS. The Navy said the connection delivered full tactical connectivity and improved overall communications efficiency.

“Link 22 is a highly complex system, representing the Navy’s newest and most advanced tactical data link.” said Cmdr. Michael Arnold, Mount Whitney’s communication systems officer. “By successfully establishing this connection, the technicians aboard Mount Whitney and Hamburg became the first to organically bring up Link 22 entirely without outside technical support.”

The system gives Mount Whitney and NATO allies access to each other’s situational analysis. The Navy said that shared tactical picture strengthens warfighting effectiveness and improves the ability of allied forces to operate together.

“As the Sixth Fleet Flag ship, Team 20’s mission is command-and-control” said Capt. Colin Price, commanding officer of Mount Whitney. “Link 22 enhances our communications scope with NATO, keeping us ready on all fronts.”

The successful Link 22 integration reflects the Navy’s effort to modernize tactical data networks and expand maritime communications capability. The service said the milestone increases the reach and effectiveness of maritime operations with NATO partners.

Mount Whitney is on a scheduled deployment in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations. The ship is supporting the warfighting effectiveness, lethality and readiness of U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa while defending U.S., allied and partner interests in the region.
