The 122nd Fighter Wing has completed its transition to F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft, restoring full combat certification and deployment readiness. The milestone follows a three-year conversion process involving extensive training and operational validation.

The transition culminated in multiple inspections and a successful demonstration of mission readiness. This included the ability to employ live munitions during Exercise Checkered Flag 26-1 at Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida.

“I am extremely proud of my fellow Blacksnakes who poured their heart and soul into the mission every single day to make this F-16 conversion a resounding and historic success,” said Scott T. Boatright, commander of the 122nd Fighter Wing. “The Blacksnakes now stand ready to do the nation’s business as a lethal, mission ready, and combat capable fighter wing.”

“We could not have achieved this outstanding triumph without the innovation, technical expertise, and embracing of the warrior ethos by every Airman at the 122nd,” he added. The unit is now prepared to support operations for the community, state and nation.

The conversion programme was initiated under the fiscal year 2023 National Defense Authorization Act. The legislation, passed by the U.S. Congress and signed into law on December 23, 2022, directed the replacement of A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft with F-16 fighters.

A total of 21 A-10 aircraft previously operated at Baer Field were replaced as part of the transition. The move marks a shift in mission capabilities for the unit.

The 122nd Fighter Wing, known as the “Blacksnakes,” has a history of operating fighter aircraft from Fort Wayne. The unit previously flew earlier-generation F-16 aircraft between 1991 and 2010.

Now equipped with Block 40 F-16 Fighting Falcons, the wing is positioned to provide combat-ready airpower. The aircraft are intended to support Combatant Commanders in operations worldwide.

The completion of the conversion marks a significant step in maintaining operational readiness. It also reinforces the role of the Air National Guard in supporting national defense objectives.
