Escorted by two Swedish JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets, the bombers proceeded to the Vidsel Test Range, where they released GBU-38 Joint Direct Attack Munitions. The mission was supported on the ground by both U.S. and Swedish Joint Terminal Attack Controllers, ensuring precise targeting and execution.
This exercise aimed to refine precision strike capabilities in a complex training environment while strengthening interoperability between air and ground forces. By conducting live-fire operations in Sweden, the U.S. Air Force and its Swedish counterparts enhanced their ability to operate together in real-world scenarios.
As part of the mission, the B-52 bombers also performed a low-formation flyover of the Swedish Parliament in Stockholm. This event commemorated the first anniversary of Sweden’s accession to NATO, symbolising the country’s closer integration with the alliance.
The aircraft and aircrews involved in the operation are currently deployed with the 69th Expeditionary Bomb Squadron at RAF Fairford, England. From this strategic location, they continue to conduct operations alongside NATO allies and partners across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.
VIKING NEBULA is the eleventh operation conducted as part of this Bomber Task Force deployment.
