The handover opens the delivery phase of the $500 million contract signed in 2023. The programme is intended to expand and modernise Sweden’s divisional artillery.
Sweden announced a separate order for another 18 Archer systems in 2025 as part of a military support package. BAE Systems said the first transfer cleared the way for further deliveries.
Lena Gillström, chief executive of BAE Systems Bofors, said the handover reflected close coordination between the manufacturer, FMV and the Swedish Armed Forces. “Seeing the Archers formally handed over to the Swedish Armed Forces is proof of our shared commitment to strengthening Sweden’s long-range artillery capabilities.”
Archer was developed to combine artillery firepower with the mobility needed to accompany fast-moving land forces. BAE Systems also identifies survivability as one of the wheeled system’s principal operational features.
